Mambo!!!

What kind of music do you like? If you like anything other than crap, then chances are you’re out of luck with Beats. The $300 pairs of headphones sound terrible, and there’s plenty of headphones out there that sound better than Beats, and yet cost less.
Click for a review of the Audio Technica ATH-M50 Review.

My favorite pair of headphones are a toss up between the aforementioned M50’s and the Sennheiser HD598‘s. I’m a fan of classical music, so the open-backed 598’s are a little more appealing to me. Although I can’t take the 598’s outside (the sound bleeds out freely!).

They are both incredibly detailed in their sound reproduction. The bass is definitely much more pronounced with the M50’s. The HD598’s bass is actually very tight…but it sounds flat in comparison. The open-backed design is again the reason why.

Have you tried either? Let me know!

Pet Profiles

for FOAF and RDF

Semantic Web development so far has shown an unjustifiable bias towards two-legged creatures. This experiment is an attempt aimed at redressing the balance.

Ontology/Schema (view source for the RDF/XML)
update : 2004-08-04

Nothing much has happened. Except a correction to the ontology/schema – non-existent owl:range now replaced by rdfs:range. Thanks jsled.

update : 2004-04-28

I’ve got the XSLT+CSS version working, and also have set up a simple backend for storing the profiles. I think I’ll move all the demo stuff over there, and just keep the background docs and schema here.

Here’s an example: Sambuca (view source to see the RDF), XSLT, CSS and resulting HTML

update : 2004-04-24

The ontology has been changed somewhat, which has been reflected in the Pet-a-matic.

I’ve also tried direct CSS styling of the RDF/XML profiles, and there’s a sample here: Sambuca

This is only likely to display correctly in Mozilla-based browsers. View source to see the data. I’ve not updated the XSLT stylesheet to reflect the changes in the ontology, but that should provide better cross-browser support.

XSLT for individual profiles : pet.xsl

Atom

The original name for atom was meant to describe the smallest unit of the universe. It meant ‘indivisible’. Of course, anyone who lived through the 20th century knows that it is no true. This paradigm shift in our world teaches us to never assume that our world is what it appears to be. All the assumptions we have about how things work do not mean that it’s how they will always be.

….Okay, what am I getting at? I wanted to show you how a new toy phenomenon, Skylanders, manages to take our modern technology, and our fears about it, and turn it into one of the most profitable phenomena of modern times.

Skylanders are both toys and a video game. The toys are characters that come to live inside the video game. It creates a piracy proof phenomenon because you can’t just download the game and play it: you need the Skylanders Figures to play the game (starter figures are sold with the game).

Generally things geared towards children aren’t too worried about piracy because, well, kids don’t know how. But the other beauty of Skylanders is that it separates the kids (or rather, parents) who will spend hundreds of dollars on a single phenomenon, while not excluding the regular children who can only afford a few figures. That way Activision is able to maximize profits from their fanbase. They aren’t leaving any money on the table.
